Not the little white ball kind...

I have told some tales about our German Shepherd "Wunderhund", Golf. I was thrilled this week when I found his father, Quido von Haus Schutting, on the internet. Only two of his male offspring made the championship line, but we already knew Golf wasn't a show dog. He was too doofy. We met Quido once, a long time ago. He was about nine years old when we saw him and he was frisky and active as a pup...and Golf looked just like him.

So in honor of wonder dogs everywhere, here's another Golf gem. And I swear it's true.

Golf trained himself to pee in the tub if we were out of the house and he couldn't wait...yeah, he did! And he would hold a load of crap indefinitely...he looked so funny squeezing his butt together heading for the dog walk. But he also required a certain amount of respect. If we told him we were going out an would be late, he would stick it out. But one afternoon we were walking through the PX at BFV and ran into some friends. We drifted over to the the NCO club to have dinner together and decided to go to the movies after. It was after 10pm by the time we got home. When I opened the door, instead of the whirling dervish we usually encountered upon arriving home, Golf was in the entry way looking at us. He had dragged one of the chairs from the kitchen table out into the entry. While looking me dead in the eye, he lifted his leg and peed all over the chair. We hadn't informed him of our plans.

As doofy as he was, the dog took his primary duties very seriously. When MamaCharlie walked him, he always sidled up to her and gently nudged her to the right side of the sidewalk, keeping himself firmly between her and anyone coming the other way. One time when MamaCharlie was handing out glasses of water to too many noisy, thirsty, sweaty, guys, Golf reached his tolerance limit and cleared the kitchen out in about 2 seconds...all those sweaty, thirsty young men were only too happy to forego the water in favor of a quick exit! I was always amazed at how quickly he transitioned from doofy house pet to the top level "Schutzhund" he was trained to be.

I find it amazing how dogs just "know" that stuff! Protecting Mama Charlie. Ours was a belgium sheppard (mostly - and mostly mutt too). We never trained him to protect the kids, but he did! When they were playing in the yard, NO ONE (except ma and pa) could go into the yard. Not man nor animal!

He was good about doing his job where he was supposed to as well. The back of the yard along the fence always had the greenest grass! That is until one day he got into a pound of butter when we were gone. I dont think even God himself could have held it in!

Taught us a lesson! Never leave butter on the table!

Yes, definitely to both! If ever we doubt a God, we only have to look at our dogs.
